Taiwan Sugar Corporation was established on May 1, 1946, operating as a national enterprise under the supervision of the Ministry of Economic Affairs.
For more than a decade, from 1952 till 1964, sugar was Taiwan's largest export commodity, accounting for 74 percent of the nation's total foreign exchange earnings at its peak, and making a large contribution to the development of Taiwan's agriculture.
Since 1964, owing to Taiwan's economic structure changes, the sugar industry has waned although sugar still plays an important role in the economy.
